The Gift of Discernment

My inner voice has really been nudging me this week to blog about discernment so that’s the topic for today.

This last week-end at the Open House at the Center, I was looking around at all the gifted psychics we have each month and I felt really proud that we have gifted psychics with integrity who have worked hard for years to understand and hone their skills. I know how challenging it can be to develop these gifts and handle the responsibility that goes along with them.

This week in class one of my students mentioned that the tv show 20/20 did an expose last week on psychics who scam people (no, they didn’t focus on any of the positive work that psychics do) and of course it was upsetting  to have that reminder that there are people out there in the world, calling themselves psychics and bilking people out of hundreds if not thousands of dollars for “psychic information.” Their usual schtick is to tell people there is a curse on them and for a mere five thousand dollars, they can get rid of it. If they find someone who is gullible and hasn’t checked in with their inner voice to see if this is a scam or not, the so called psychic usually comes up with other reasons for this person to continue to pay them large amounts of money.

It’s been my experience that these particular “psychics” are not psychic at all. They are scam artists looking for vulnerable people and the world is full of them. Every profession has them and that’s why we need to know about our gift of discernment.

We all have this gift within us. Discernment is the voice within and it always lets us know if we are dealing with someone that isn’t good for us but we have to ask for it’s guidance, listen for it and then trust it.

When my inner voice said to talk about the gift of discernment, I asked it why and it said that with this new energy, we all need to know how to discern truth from non-truth. There are alot of people predicting doom and gloom on the internet and many students have asked me if these predictions are true and if they should be living in fear. Should they be stocking up on toilet paper and water. Should they get all their money out of the banks. There is alot of confusion out there and I can assure you, if you are listening to your inner voice it will always keep you informed if there’s something you need to do.

We all need to be paying attention right now because life has gotten more intense and this new energy is pushing us to deal with our stuff. The word RESISTANCE comes to mind. Is there anything going on in your life right now that you’re resisting to look at or change? Resistance is the key. If you have needed therapy for a long time, but have been resisting it, now is time. If you’ve been resisting getting out of bad job, bad relationship or resisting going to the doctor to find out about a health concern, now is the time.

The energy is showing us our destructive patterns and if we don’t pay attention and make the changes we need to, it’s going to push us harder. Why is the Universe doing this? Because it’s time for us to heal and the stuff we don’t heal while here on Earth goes with us when we cross over. People have the notion that when we die all of our negativity and destructive patterns die but that’s not the case. Our pain is our pain and we need to clear it out of our soul so that we can be happy

Here’s some questions to ask yourself. Do you have stored grief? Holding onto resentments that are keeping you from moving forward in your life? Anger or rage at people or situations from the past or present? Fear of change? Are you codependent? Holding on to the unfairness of your life? Lack of forgiveness for situations or people? Do you live by other people’s beliefs that no longer fit you? Are you afraid of happiness because the other shoe might drop? Do you blame God or others for the state of your life? Are you addicted to alcohol, drugs, gambling, sex or food? Do you remember only the mean things people have said to you about you and never remember all the good they’ve said? These are just a few ways were we can get stuck and the Universe is trying very hard right now to get us free from all of this.

There are lots of really cool people in the world that can help you with your healing process and there are also some not so good people and I come full circle back to our gift of discernment. Ask the Universe/God to help you know who’s right for you. Always check in with that internal voice for validation when seeking help. Just because someone is well known or doesn’t charge alot of money does not mean they are right for you. Flow with this new energy. Don’t resist it. Believe it or not, this is all about you being a happier person.

I’d like to add a piece here for those of you who know or sense you have psychic gifts but you’ve been told they are bad or evil and you’re not sure what to do with them. You’ve tried shutting the door on them, but they won’t go away. When I was younger and “christian” friends were telling me these gifts are evil, I was very confused about why God would give me evil gifts. I asked God ALL THE TIME for a sign as to whether or not psychic abilities are wrong. I told him if they are wrong or evil, please take them away, but they never went away. My gift of discernment never said yes when I asked if these gifts are evil.

I learned that I needed to stay away from people with these beliefs and work with God to understand my gifts. So many people come to me feeling confused about having the gift of prophecy because their minister/rabbi/priest told them these gifts are bad. Please know that these well intentioned people are stuck in old beliefs and haven’t done any research to understand these gifts. As it says in Corinthians, there are 9 Gifts of the Spirit and the Gift of Prophecy is one of them. These gifts come from the Holy Spirit and if that’s the case, religion should be helping us understand and work with our gifts rather than try to deny or get rid of them. If you suspect you have these gifts, find a good reputable teacher to work with. Use your gift of discernment when choosing classes or a mentor.

I’ve found there’s an answer even for those that deal with others saying “psychic is evil” and that is when Christ was asked how to tell if someone is His follower or not. To paraphrase – ‘You will know them by their demonstration of the fruits of the spirit – loving kindness, forgiveness, understanding, mercy, patience, etc.’ To me, He was saying don’t look at what a person believes, so much as what their behavior is – based on their beliefs. How they relate to one another is what shows their real beliefs. For me, also this means that what others say, isn’t always coming from a place of loving kindness, mercy, understanding, patience. If it’s coming from a place of prejudice or judgment, then think twice about following their advice.
For me, I’ve also learned that being psychic or not being psychic isn’t what this life is about. Psychic ability is a worthy tool, but for me, it’s whether or not I can find the path to love God above all else, and love my neighbor as myself. Then manifest that love in whatever way I can, including letting those with different beliefs have their beliefs. For me, Christ’s words to Peter, “You don’t worry about those others, I’ll worry about those others. You follow me.” helps me to let go and let others decide their own beliefs. I’m not drawn into judging them or disagreeing or anything. At that point, I feel okay with letting others have their beliefs as they so choose. I’ve learned that I can’t have a relationship with God, through someone else’s beliefs, through someone else’s heart or through someone else’s mind. I can only have a relationship with God through my own.
